Polo/Ralph Lauren 888 Madison Avenue
New York, NY
Located in the Upper East Side Historic District, the southwest corner of Madison Avenue and East 72nd Street was occupied by a building which did not contribute to the character of the historic district. The Owner wished to develop the property with a retail store and sought a Preservation Consultant familiar with the requirements of the Landmarks Preservation Commission to work with the Design Team.
Li/Saltzman Architects provided guidance in developing a design that was appropriate to the scale and fabric of the historic district. Working with the Design Architects, LSA developed a Beaux-Arts inspired vocabulary of materials, fenestration and ornament for the new building. The Indiana limestone façade is graced with brackets, corbels, and balustrades and wrought iron enframed entries. In addition, LSA established the restoration program for the adjacent limestone rowhouse. The new building and the restored rowhouse establish a strong and contextual presence for the retail store which was completed in 2010.
