68 East 93rd Street

New York, NY

68 East 93rd Street is a five-story, Renaissance Revival style brownstone-fronted rowhouse designed by Max Hensel which was originally constructed as part of a row of three flats buildings in 1890. The building is located within the Carnegie Hill Historic District. Prior to designation, the building had undergone several unsympathetic modifications to the historic façade, including loss of historic brownstone decorative details, addition of mid-century ironwork at the stoop and fire escape, and the installation of storm windows.

Li/Saltzman Architects served as Preservation Architect for the exterior restoration of the building. Scope included performing an initial investigation of existing conditions, reviewing historic archival research materials, preparing prioritized treatment recommendations, preparing construction documents for the proposed restoration work, and performing construction administration. The building’s exterior restoration scope received financial assistance from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. All work was approved by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
