Holy Trinity Rectory

New York, NY

The Holy Trinity Rectory, located at 332 East 88th Street, is part of the Holy Trinity Church complex, designed in the French Gothic Revival style by Barney & Chapman and constructed in 1897. The Rectory is constructed of buff Roman iron spot brick with terra cotta trim and topped by a steeply pitched red slate roof with copper trim and cresting, elaborate gabled terra cotta dormers, and a turreted bay on the east elevation. The Church complex is an Individual Landmark designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.

LSA was retained by the Church as Preservation Architect for the restoration and repair of the Rectory. The work is being performed to obtain a special permit pursuant to a Section 74-711 Special Permit, to allow the use of the adjacent Rhinelander Building as a commercial tutoring service. The restoration includes the replacement and repointing of brick and terra cotta units, slate repairs, the installation of new gutters and leaders, and the recreation of missing decorative copper elements at the Rectory’s roof cresting. Work is in progress and is anticipated to be completed in 2021.
