550 Clinton Avenue is a 29-story residential building designed by Morris Adjmi Architects (MAA), located in the developing Clinton Hill Neighborhood of Brooklyn. The design of 550 Clinton Avenue pays homage to the Romanesque Revival style Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew, a New York City Landmark, located on the adjacent lot. The tower’s gently torquing form preserves and frames views of the Church’s iconic belfry whose colonettes inspired the sculptural profile of the new building’s concrete panel cladding. Construction of 550 Clinton is expected to be completed in 2022.

Li · Saltzman Architects served as the preservation consultant and New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) liaison to MAA and Hopestreet Capital, the building’s developer. LSA guided MAA in the development of an architectural solution that sensitively responded to the historical context of Clinton Hill and the Church of St. Luke and St. Mathew’s design, despite the building’s large scale. LSA is also the Preservation Architect for the restoration of the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew which acted as the Preservation Purpose for the development in accordance with special permit – Section 74-711 of the Zoning Resolution, ultimately allowing the building’s out-of-right final design.
